A backlink is a link from another website to yours. When a trusted site points to your page, it acts like a recommendation. Search engines use these recommendations as one of many signals when deciding which pages to rank.
Imagine asking friends for a plumber. If three people you trust name the same one, you feel confident. If a stranger you have never met shouts a name at you, you do not. Search engines weigh links in a similar way: who is linking matters as much as how many.
Links from sites created only to sell links, unrelated pages stuffed with hundreds of outbound links and comment spam offer little value. Some can even cause problems if search engines treat them as manipulation.
Anchor text is the clickable wording of a link. Natural anchors, such as your brand name, a page title or a descriptive phrase, look healthy. Repeating an exact keyword in every link looks forced.
Some links include a tag asking search engines not to pass credit. Those are still worth having when they send real visitors, and a normal profile contains a mix of both types.
There is no magic number. Look at the sites ranking above you and compare their link profiles with yours. Your goal is to close the gap with links that are relevant and trustworthy.
